Romanesque Holiday part2

Another day, another excursion!. So we decided to visit the picturesque villages of Hecho and Ansó, which are highly recommended in every touristic guide (for good reason!).

Otro día, otra excursión!, Nos fuimos a visitar los pueblos de Hecho y Ansó, que recomiendan en todas las guías, por buenas razones.

We started in the nearby village of Siresa, where the monastery of San Pedro is the main attraction (even if the landscapes are also stunning!). It's a large buiding indeed, in a beautiful romanesque architecture, really imposing!.
After refreshing ourselves with a tapa and non-alcoholic beer, we visited Hecho and had a great time watching the traditional architecture.
Empezamos por el cercano pueblecito de Siresa, donde el monasterio de San Pedro es la principal atracción, aunque hay también paisajes estupendos. El tamaño del monasterio es impresionante, la arquitectura románica magnífica
Después de un pinchito de tortilla y una cerveza sin, ya repuestas las fuerzas, nos fuimos a ver Hecho y pasamos un buen rato observando las construcciones tradicionales, unas casas muy bonitas.

Next stop was Ansó, another idilic village which is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain (see it here). As it was Sunday, the atmosphere was quite lively, with the locals and visitors having the 'vermú' in the terraces, enjoying the sunshine!. But the weather can change abruptly in the mountains, and stormy weather was on its way!

La siguiente parada fue Ansó, otro pueblo idílico que además está en la lista de los pueblos más bonitos de España (podéis verlo aquí). Como era domingo, estaba bastante animado, con las terrazas llenas de gente tomando el vermú, con un sol increíble. Pero el tiempo cambia rápido en las montañas, y se nos venía encima una tormenta tremenda!.

We decided not to take the same road to go back to Jaca, but take the more 'picturesque' route through the Biniés gorge. Obviously, the landscape was impressive but we couldn't enjoy it, as we had to keep our eyes on the road. And what a road!. Probably the worst I've ever seen, not only it was narrow and curvy (which is normal, as this is a mountainous area) but also extremely difficult due to poor visibility, and incredibly battered too (a mule trail!). Totally a bad idea. But we were lucky, as the storm hit us when we had left it back! (we can't even imagine how could be to drive in heavy rain and hail on that road!)

Decidimos no volver por el mismo sitio a Jaca, así que tomamos otra carretera, más 'pintoresca', a través de la Foz de Biniés. Claro que los paisajes son impresionantes, pero ni los vimos, porque estuvimos todo el rato con los ojos en la carretera. Porque no sólo era estrecha y con curvas (que es algo totalmente normal, considerando la zona) sino que además tenía poquísima visibilidad, y estaba destrozada y con piedra caída. No fue una buena idea, pero al menos tuvimos la suerte de que la tormenta nos cayese encima cuando ya la habíamos dejado atrás, porque no me quiero imaginar esa carretera con lluvia fuerte y granizo.

Next day, we had booked a guided visit to some churches in the Serrablo Routes (totally recommend this page). But we started our day visiting the Traditional Arts Museum at Sabiñánigo, one of the most beautiful ethnological museums I've ever seen. Not only the building is really an epitome of local architecture, but the restoration and the details are amazing, not to mention the really kind people who welcome us in the museum.

Al siguiente día teníamos reservada una visita guiada a algunas iglesitas de la ruta del Serrablo (una página muy útil!). Pero antes, empezamos por visitar el Museo de Artes del Serrablo en Sabiñánigo, uno de los museos etnológicos más bonitos que he visto, precioso el edificio y además la restauración y la selección excelente. Y además, el personal del museo es extremadamente amable y nos dió toda clase de información y detalles.

Then we meet our guide to visit three of the fantastic Serrablo churches, which were built a thousand years ago. We had visited them twenty five years ago and felt in love with those stunning little pieces of Art. There's something particularly appealing in their proportions and style. Luego nos reunimos con nuestra guía para la visita a estas increíbles Iglesias del Serrablo, construidas hace mil años en un estilo muy peculiar y aún controvertido. La habíamos visitado hace veinticinco años y nos fascinaron, y ahora me siguen pareciendo especialmente hermosas, las proporciones y el estilo son muy especiales. Más fotos aquí.

Next day we drove to a more distant destiny, the castle of Loarre (see more pics here). Once more, we had to managed through a curvy road (actually, Mr.A. did) but we were rewarded with fantastic views. Even more fantastic views, once we parked and approached the castle by feet, totally amazing!. We took the guided tour which was really interesting and had lots of information, then we walked around by ourselves (there are good edge protection, in case you have a fear of heights!).
We drived to the next village for lunch and then back to Jaca, where we spent the rest of the day relaxing and getting prepared to say goodbye.

Al día siguiente elegimos un destino algo más distante, el castillo de Loarre (más fotos aquí). De nuevo la carretera era complicadita, pero las vistas realmente valían la pena (una vez que llegamos arriba!). Aproximarse al castillo caminando desde el parking realmente impresiona. Nos unimos a la visita guiada, muy interesante, y luego estuvimos recorriendo el lugar por nuestra cuenta un buen rato (si tenéis vértigo, mejor mantenerse alejado de los lugares con vistas, está muy alto!). Luego paramos en el siguiente pueblo para comer algo, y ya volvimos a Jaca, para pasar el resto del día relajadamente, porque al día siguiente ya nos íbamos de allí.

I think it's difficult to share how impressive our romanesque holiday has been, I'm still in awe!. Despite the narrow (and battered) roads, there so many fantastic places to visit and landscapes are really beautiful, whatever the season!

Romanesque Holiday

I'm back to work (and reality) after a long holiday, we took a fortnight's holiday!. And it was a really relaxing time with no computers and no social media, so totally my kind of thing, even if sometimes I missed my blogging!.
We went to Jaca, at merely two hours drive (even if the roads are not the best ones), where we had a room at a cute bed&breakfast. We took it as our central hub, the place to go back and have dinner after a long day walking and watching old stones. As it was not peak season (both summer and winter are peak season) we could enjoy a lively but not crowded atmosphere.

Ya estoy de vuelta, después de unas largas vacaciones, han sido ¡quince días!. Y han sido unas vacaciones de verdad, tranquilísimas sin ordenador ni redes sociales, totalmente a mi gusto, aunque a veces echase de menos el blogueo.
Hemos ido a Jaca, a unas dos horas en coche, aunque las carreteras no sean las mejores, y allí nos hemos quedado en una habitación muy coqueta, tipo bed&breakfast. Nos hemos movido alrededor, pero volviendo cada día después de andar por ahí viendo piedras viejas, para cenar y descansar allí. Como no es temporada alta (que son tanto verano como invierno), el ambiente estaba suficientemente animado pero sin agobiar.

After visiting the local monuments at Jaca, particularly the romanesque Cathedral and the impressive pentagonal citadel, next day we payed a visit to the nearby San Juan de la Peña, a romanesque monastery which is literally under a rock (as its name implies!). We hadn't visited it since the 90's but remembered it quite well, it's really breathtaking. It's a touristic hotspot, so I don't recommend to visit it in the middle of the summer, particularly if you go by car (limited parking due to orography). Neither in the Winter, as there's a mountain road with all that implies.

Después de visitar Jaca y sus monumentos, particularmente la catedral románica y la interesante ciudadela, al día siguiente salimos de excursión a ver el monasterio de San Juan de La Peña, un monasterio románico que, como su propio nombre indica, está literalmente bajo una peña. Un lugar magnífico, el paisaje, el edificio, todo lo recordábamos de haberlo visitado allá por los noventa, y sigue siendo impresionante. Al ser un momumento tan famoso, atrae mucho turismo, así que igual no es lo mejor visitarlo en plena temporada de verano, sobre todo si vas en tu coche (el aparcamiento es limitado, debido a la orografía). Tampoco me parece buena idea ir en invierno con mal tiempo, hay una carreterita de montaña, con todo lo que implica.

There's a 'new' monastery, built in the 17th century (see it here, I couldn't take photos because of the fog). It has been recently rebuilt to show the archaeological research in the area, so you can walk and see the remainings of the different dependencies of the monastery in a really didactic exhibition, which we loved: more info and pics here.

El monasterio 'nuevo' data del siglo XVII (podéis verlo aquí, no pude tomar fotos por la niebla). Ha sido recientemente rehabilitado para albergar la excavación arqueológica, así que se pueden visitar los restos de las dependencias del monasterio, una exposición que nos gustó mucho: más info aquí.

We also visited the nearby village of Santa Cruz de La Serós, where there's another magnificent romanesque church, and a small hermitage, in the middle of a beautiful landscape. There was some snow still visible on the higher mountains around, but we were told by locals that the mountains usually have a whole white cap in June, not just those few spots, that's how they look in August!. The weather has been incredibly dry even in the Pyrenees. También visitamos el pueblecito cercano de Santa Cruz de La Serós, donde se puede ver la iglesia románica (magnífica y muy alta) y una ermita muy bonita, en medio de un paisaje impresionante. Todavía había unas manchas de nieve en las montañas a lo lejos, pero nos contaron que así es como suelen estar ¡en Agosto!, porque en junio todavía se ven blancas las cumbres. El tiempo también ha sido muy seco en los Pirineos.

I don't know how many times I've used the word 'romanesque' in this post, but probably they were too many for most of you. And there's still a whole new post with more of this stuff that I'll post tomorrow!. Obviously, you can ignore it, I'll be back to business as usual soon!

No sé cuántas veces he utilizado la palabra 'románico', pero probablemente sean más de las que podáis soportar. Y todavía queda otro post con más de lo mismo, que publicaré mañana. Así que, podéis ignorarlo si no es de vuestro gusto, volveremos a la programación habitual muy pronto.

Spring Says Goodbye

We have not had any Spring as it was used to be, but finally it's raining, storms are forming every evening, even if torrential rain is not the better thing on a dry soil. The weather is becoming a trendy topic of conversation, as many people are worried about their orchards and vegetable gardens (and vineyards, obviously) as they provide significant income. From a selfish point of view, I'm worried too as a huge fan of local cherries and peaches. Hoping for the best!

No hemos tenido una verdadera primavera como debe ser, pero al final está lloviendo, hay tormentas cada tarde, aunque la lluvia torrencial no es lo mejor sobre el suelo tan seco. El clima se está convirtiendo en el tema de conversación favorito, ya que tanta gente está preocupada por sus huertos y árboles (y viñedos, evidentemente), ya que son una fuente de ingresos importante. Desde un punto de vista egoísta, también me preocupa, pero como consumidora de las cerezas y melocotones de los huertos locales. Espero que todo vaya bien.

Orange looked like a good idea to cheer up my Monday. So I wore this second hand top which is the one and only cloth by Zara I own (quite good quality, still looking good despite some heavy use and frequent washing). Trousers by Festa (old). Sneakers by Reebok outlet. Usual cork bag by Fine Cork Portugal. Necklace was a present, ages ago.

El color naranja me pareció una buena idea para animar el lunes. Así que me puse esta blusa de segunda mano, que es la única prenda de Zara que tengo y que resulta ser de bastante buena calidad, ya que sigue estando aceptable después de ponérmela (y lavarla) mucho. Pantalón Festa (antiguo). Zapatillas Reebok outlet. El habitual bolso de corcho de Fine Cork Portugal. Collar fue un regalo, de hace años.

I wore this self-sewed trousers twice in a row, and also repeated a similar colour combo. Black blouse was a second hand find at Sunday street market. Yellow cardi from eBay (years ago). Sandals by Yokono (last year). Some home-grown vintage jewellery. A sarong as a scarf by LaRedoute (old). Cork bag by Fine Cork Portugal. Next day I picked a yellow top by CandA (years old) and that hand-me-down jacket (probably a 90's piece, it came from a friend's wardrobe). Yellow straw bag was shopped retail, years ago.

Me puse estos mismos pantalones (de costura propia) dos veces seguidas y también repetí la misma combinación de colores. Blusa negra de segunda mano del mercadillo del domingo. Chaquetita amarilla de eBay, hace años. Sandalias Yokono (del año pasado). Bisutería tan vieja que ya es vintage. Un pareo antigüito a modo de pañuelo, LaRedoute. Bolso de corcho de Fine Cork Portugal. Al día siguiente elegí una camiseta amarilla de CandA (hace años) y esta chaqueta larga que me dió una amiga (probablemente es de los 90). El bolso amarillo lo compré en una tienda local, hace años.

Back to usual colourful style, I wore my crochet cardi-coat and second hand floral trousers. Self-sewed top was previously a tunic (I've shortened some tunics, as I was needing tops to go with trousers). Sneakers by Adidas outlet. Necklace was charity shopped. Earrings acquired at local retailer Eme.

De vuelta al habitual estilo colorido, me puse la chaqueta de ganchillo multicolor y unos pantalones florales de segunda mano. La blusa es de costura propia, era una túnica y la he acortado (como he hecho con otras, porque necesitaba tops que fuesen con pantalones). Zapatillas Adidas outlet. Collar de una tienda solidaria. Pendientes de la tienda local de Eme.

Another day, another colourful combo!. As my days at work have become hectic, I try to pick comfy outfits. Tunic was custom made (at a local business) years ago. Red trousers shopped at a clearance sale (not the best quality, I've had to mend them! twice!). Scarf from a charity market.

Otro día más y otro conjunto a todo color. Como estamos en temporada alta de trabajo, necesito comodidad sobre todo. La túnica me la hicieron en una tienda local, hace años. Pantalón de una liquidación, y no ha resultado muy bien, lo he tenido que remendar ya dos veces. Pañuelo de un mercadillo solidario.

As the weather is so 'properly spring', it's quite hot in the mornings (28ºC), so it's time to wear summer clothes!. That dress is Brand New, shopped at PuntRoma some weeks ago, and the first new dress I've acquired in years. Not that I need more clothes, but summer can make your wardrobe (and yourself!) feel exhausted, so I hope that this new dress will refresh my 'heatwave capsule'.

Como el tiempo se ha vuelto tan primaveral, también hace calor por las mañanas (28ºC), así que hay que sacar la ropa de verano ya!. Este vestido es nuevecito, comprado en PuntRoma hace unas semanas, y el primer vestido que me compro Nuevo en años. No es que necesite ropa, pero el verano se hace agotador y el vestuario necesita un poco de novedad y refresco, sobre todo la ropa específica para mucho calor.

Saturday morning is usually a relaxing time, we run errands and then have our usual apéro at local tabernas. Not particularly picturesque alley, but that's Real Life!

El sábado por la mañana suele ser relajado, solemos salir a hacer recados y luego a tomar el vermú en los bares de siempre. No es un callejón especialmente bonito, pero ¡así es la Vida Real!.
